Xi'an on foot and by bike

I'm trying to post this note but blogspot seems to be blocked as the facebook is, so I'm still writting offline.
I've just got to Xi'an (Han Tang Hostel in Xi'an). Hard sleeper train was not for hardsleepers in my opinion, it was really quiet and noone snored. What a luck! It was really ok. I guess that I was the only white person on the whole train and everyone passing by was staring at me.
Of course I would not be myself if I would not be running to catch this train. I knew that I need about an hour to get there but even though I took bigger buffer it was not enough (actually buffer got a little bit smaller than initially planned because of visit to Lama Temple before I've left Beijing, that took longer than planned). And when you think you are almost there is still 10 minutes walk to get to the platform. You need to climb the bridge to cross the street, pass security check (polish ability to sneak in to the queue was very usefull here), find platform, show your ticket and run to the end of the train. Isn't it obvious that you always get place in the last carrige? But luckily, I've made it!
What was surprising and useless on the train it was ticket swap. I had to give my ticket and I've received plastic card which I had to give back before we've arrived to Xi'an. OK, one thing that was usefull was that I was woken up to give it back, so I knew in advance that I have to get off soon.
My food on the way to the train station (dunno what´s that exactly, byt it´s tasty)
Sometimes it is very good to go sightseeing around 10 and not 13 as it used to be in Bejing. I've arrived to hostel at 8 so at 10 I was ready to go. And there was sun (not covered by smog) which made me to want to go even more. With Fran - Dutch guy we did quite a bit. First Big Wild Goose Temple - same as other temples, next we took a look at Drum and Bell Towers - same as Beijing and did a bike ride on the walls which go around the city. And in fact we've ridden on the top of the walls. They are 12-14 m wide at the top and 15-16 at the bottom and 14km long. Even though it was nice tit got boring after a while, as it was all the same, very uneven surface, but it made fun too, especially when on the one spot we've observed P.E. classes. They were doing some gymnastics and they were facing us, so we've started to make fun of them. Repeating what they do, waving to them or going our own excercises. After they've spoted us doing it they were laughing all the time, we could see that. I hope we've made their day good.

After a ride it was time to get some sweet snack in Muslim Quarter (somehow similar to hutongs in Beijing, except Great Mosque which you will not find in Beijing and which we've only found by chance, as it's very well hidden and due to that very peacefull and calm). So many nice things, I could not decide what I want. So many sesam, nuts, halva snacks.

We've also seen something for lunch which we couldn't tell what it was, kind of jelly squares, fried on the huge pan with some spices. And that's it. Nothing else. Wedensday is day to give it a try, as tomorrow I plan to see Terrakota Warriors.

Beijing more friendly

I'm still in Beijing and I feel much better here now. Even smog which makes the city depresive is not so annoying any more. It it annoying in respect to photo taking. All photos are blured and it looks like it is foggy.
Sightseeing is tirying, especially when it goes togehter with partying, but it is still ok. I've met some friends of mine and we had dinner in one of the chinese restaurants nearby my hostel. We've ordered so much food that we were not able to eat it all and we've paid only 40 RMB each. Sweet. I've treid around 10 different things, but I even do not know their names. but still, it was very tasty.
Next day I've went to buy tickets to Xi'an. It took me about 1h on the railway station, 3 different queues and 700 RMB to get return ticket to Xi'an from Beijing. I wanted hard sleepers, but on the way back I've managed to get soft sleeper only (or hard seat - that must be nightmare). I was told that I was lucky anyway. Usually you should book them 10 days in advance.
Next I went to see Olympic Stadium. Impressive. You can see that everything there is new. New tube, and new tube stations, new toilets, roads, parks. Bird's Nest (this is how stadium is called) is huge and can be entered only after buying a ticket and going through security check (same with the swimming pool), but I did not went to see that. Overview from outside was enough.

Great Wall is also a must when you are in Beijing. I've been there yesterday with two Canadians. That was so much fun. We've taken bus 916 to from Dingzhimen to Huairou and there taxi to Huanghua. We even did not have to search for a cab. They've almost pulled us from the bus. After some bargaining we've managed to get a price of 150 RMB both ways. i.e. 25 each one way. Paid after service. So 75 and 75.
That part of the wall where we went was not very touristic one, but still we've met some ppl. Not many though. As we did not know which way to take to climb on the wall we've just entered through one of those towers, but we had to climb throught window which was blocked by someone with wooden logs (probably not to go in?). We've found out ehy it was blocked, when we've climbed to the top. It was destroyed and very steep, untill the next tower, where was the ladder for the official climb.
We've walked/climbed there and back, took a lot of pics and headed towards the road. And just at the exit/entrance we were attacked by old chinese woman shouting 2 Yuan, 2 Yuan. She wanted money from us. I dunno if legally or not. She was pushing and touching us and did not want to let us go. Finally we've paid but it was almost a fight. We've good video for that.

Today is another day of not too much sightseeing. Yesterday was friday, so it's obvious why. Though not completly wasted, as I've seen NanLuogu Xiang (Hutong district, actually the same what we have near our hostel, but more for tourists, so nothing new for me). I prefer the small alley near hostel. It's more real.
Drum and Bell Towers (only from outside) and JingShan Park. Calm, smoggy day. The worst here since I've come.

During that 6 days in Beijing I've made some observations. I did not know about some of the things before coming here. Noone told me and I've never read about it before, so:
  • every day someone asks me for the photo, they want to have photo with me
  • lions everywhere - on the left female lion with a small lion under her paw and on the right male with a ball. They are in froint of every entrance
  • plastic foil hanging in open doors
  • very expencive food/drinks in european/american chains (like Starbucks, KFC)
  • KFC is on each corner
  • chinese ppl always walk with their lunc in plasric bag. Every place is good to sit and eat. The same as every place is good for a little nap
  • infants do not wear diapers, their trousers have hole there (isn't that too cold?)
  • chinese woman wear leggins which immitate black tights on pale skin
Some negatives
  • they try to sell everything to everyone and are very stubborn with that
  • they do not understand any signs or when I shiw them something with my hands. Sometimes they start to shout at me.
  • noone who wants to get in the tube is not bothered about ppl who want to get out. They just push to get in even though not everyone who wanted left
  • there is not vodka in supermarkets and my Zoladkowa Gorzka from Poland is finished
  • smog
  • chaos on the streets, it does not matter what light is, everyone just walks/drives/rides a bike
  • everyone spits everywhere, with that loud sound hhhhrrrrrrrrrr
Some positives too
  • very clean streets, swipped all day
  • very cheap and very good food on the street (10RMB max)
  • a lot of public toilets (of course squating ones and with baskets to throw away paper in there, what I alway forget. I just hope that I did not block any of them yet)
  • bike paths on every street, wide as lines for the cars
    Lunch on the street
This is it, kids without diapers
One more interesiting thing in Beijing was house party where I was. One of Canadian girls stayig in the hostel met some american guys living in Beijing who were making party and inviting everyone, so it happened that we've ended there too. Very ok, but party almost died around 1, so we've come back to hostel which happened to be just around the corner from their apartment.

Beijing's firts impressions

Weekend before flying to Beijing was so hectic, goodbye party, packing, going to dermatologist, resting, confirming some plans, having goodbye part again, where I got panda baloon with request to take it back to China (thanks ladies!). Finally I went to the airport Flight from Warsaw to Moscow and later on to Beijing was ok, although I must say that I do not like Aeroflot. Flight attendants were not friendly, so harsh and I'd have to say unhelpful. What's more my seat was not the one that I've chosen when I checked in online and it was broken. Beijing welcomed me with good weather and Starbucks on the airpost. I was so thirsty, desperate for the coffee and hot that I had to get one of their frappucinos, which accompanied me on the train to Dongzhimen from where I had to take 20 min walk to get to hostel. First impression was not good: poverty, killers in the cars and on the bikes, smog, smell of urine in the entrance gate. Give it a chance, give it a chance, was the only thing on my mind. So the Hostel itself is ok, it's on the edge between poor and rich districts, but it's safe and clean. And fool of people. Mostly backpackers, but also ppl who work in some smaller (is 1,5 milion inhabitants smaller?) cities and come here to see Beijing, as there is national holiday rignt now (actually it's the last day). Luckily in my 10 dorm moone snores (or was i that tired last two nioghts that I did not simply hear it?) and luckily there are some people to talk and to do some sightseeing together. Most/all? of them in my dorm are traveling on their own, like me.

 Yesterday I've seen Summer Palace

and today it was Forbiden City and Tian'anmen Square

In my opinion they are pretty the same and boring in the same way. Summer Palace is a little bit better cause it's on the suburbs and with less smog and more trees. For the Forbiden City it's only bricks and beton. I enjoy food a lot, yesterday I had kind of crepe with egg in it, soya sauce, pettersill and some restangle thing with bubbles. It looked like huge shrimp crisp but I guess it was not that. She's put it everything and rolled and gave me in a plastic bag and newspaper. Was gooood ;-) <photo> I did not know that that, they have maroni, but still my top maroni place is Zurich. After two daus of saty, making some friends, meeting two colleagues of mine who are traveling here as well I have better feelings for the city but still I cannot tell I love or even like it. It's ok, but nothing more.

the time has come

It's time to pack, but I'm not able to pack when I'm tired. After all the stress that I had last days, all the parties and nights that were only partially overslept I'm not able to concentrate on what I'm doing. So I'm packing for 5 hours already.
I had to laugh when I read e-mail from my best friend, that I've received in the mean time. She wrote: "As far as I know you, you are already packed and partying somewhere". Oh dear, not this time.
This is the stage that I've achieved today and I do not expect to reach any further.

It does not seem a lot, and indeed it is not. Actually my first feeling was - it's impossigle to pack everything that I need/want, but my bag is still not full. Am I such undemanding or did I forget something?

Outstanding tasks:
1. Print boarding tickets
2. Insure luggage
3. Choose music and load it on iPod
4. Choose book to take with me

one night in MUC

If my travelling intelligence develops further in the direction it is going now I’m not so sure if I manage to come back from Asia. Or if I even go there….
After Amsterdam adventure with going to the wrong gate and trying to fly EasyJet instead of KLM I did something better this time.
It was last day in Ingolstadt, I got a lift from a colleague from the project. I was relaxed, dropped of my luggage, I did some airport sightseeing for the last time. Art at Munich Airport. Painter imitating Andy Warhol and using German symbols, like Aspirin, Tempo tissues, sauer kraut cans etc in her works.
So nice, so relaxing.
It was not even 18. At least three more hours to boarding as my flight is at 21.30. But still I’ve decided to go to business lounge, eat something and read. I had to return my internet stick, so it was the only entertainment that I had. At least I’ll finish the book: “La tia Julia y el escribidor” by Mario Vargas Llosa. I’ve also been observing people. Something that I love to do, sit somewhere and observe. How and what they eat and drink, what they wear, where do they come from and where do they go. Like now, when I’m writing this note. Priest, who started his day with a glass of beer at about 7 in the morning.
I took a look at my boarding pass, just to check boarding gate. Oooooooo F.U.C.K. Fuck, fuck FUCK, fUCK, FuCk fUcK, FUck, fuCK, fUCk, FucK, fuck, fuck. Nooooo, that cannot be. It does not happen. This is some fucking game someone is playing with me. How come is my boarding time at 18.00? My flight is at 21.25, so how come boarding is at 18? Eighteen. One, eight. Uno, ocho. Ochenta. Achtzehn. Acht, ein. Osiemnaƛcie. Jeden, osiem. Eighteen.
Calm down, pack your book and go to the Lufthansa ticket centre: “Halo. Ich glaube, dass ich ein Problem habe. Ich was sicher, dass mein Flug um 21.25 fliegt, aber hier steht boarding Zeit 18. Ich hab gar nicht gekuckt, ich bin sicher gewesen, dass ich um 21.25 fliege. Wie immer.”
Finally I’ve managed to get ticket for next day. 8.50. But what do I do now? It’s Oktoberfest time, no places in hotels and if there are any they cost fortune. I do not have fortune. But I have some friends in MUC. Ok, but are they close/good friends enough to ask fir such favour?
First person on my list: silence (oh how stupid, why did I think it's kind of sign). But still in the mean time I‘ve bought ticket to Munich. I did not want to spend night at the airport. The worst case I go party. Kultfabrik. I know where that is, how to get there. My luggage is at the airport; I’ll lock my laptop bag in the locker at the railway station and have some fun.
Second person: I did not want to bother P, especially that in fact I’d have to sleep at his parent’s home. And they do not know me even. And he is not there. But I was so desperate that evening, that finally I’ve decided to give it a try. I was on the train to MUC already, and actually it went really smooth: Sure, let me check with my brother and I call u back. And after 5 minutes: sure, do you remember where to go? Almost, but text me address and U-Bahn station.
I’ve reached Koenigsplatz and 5 minutes later I was at home. I’ve told my story, took shower and went to bed only to get up at 5.20 and travel back to airport. Actually now I seen that, that was much too early, but I did not want to miss my plane again. Everyone was sleeping when I was leaving, so I even did not say goodbye and thank you. I’ve silently slipped out.

For sure I owe a lot to the whole H family. Thank you! You’ve made my stressful experience much more pleasant.

Scottish wedding

And still I'm in Europe, this time further though. Very good friend of mine who comes from Scotland was getting married and I got an invitation. She's too good friend to miss that wedding and foreign wedding is too interresting to miss it. It does not happen often to be able to take part in such ceremony outside the country that you come from.
So on Thursday afternoon I took plane to Warsaw, only to unpack, pack, go to bed and get up at 5 to catch a plane to Edinburgh (via. Amsterdam). This is where adventure started. We had delay in Warsaw, so not too much time in Amsterdam for transfer. So I just took a glance on the display and headed towards gate H. By the time I got there exact information was displayed, that boarding gate is H4. I did not feel like waiting in a long line so wandered around a little bit, I've spoted EasyJet plane standing directly in front of gatre H4. But who knows, maybe KLM cooperates with them. When the line reduced I went to the counter, gave my boarding pass and choked after I've heard "It's not your boarding pass". "It is". "It's EasyJet and you are flying with KLM." "F.U.C.K.!"
What's more my plane was departuring at 10.30. EasyJet at 10.40.
I don't remember running that fast recently. Walkways were very helpful, oposite to the jacket in hand and bag on my back. Bad information was too, that my correct gate i.e. D10 was almost at the second end of the Schiphol. At least I did not have to go through security, which saved my ass and I've made it. I was the last person who boarded but calmed down by very nice employees who even did not seem annoyed with my being late.
Lesson learned: Always check destination and flight no when you board.

After that I've arrived with no problems in EDI. Even my luggage did not get lost. I took Airlink to the city centre where J. was waiting for me. Than we got a ride from J to Dumfries.
Most of the evening we spent hanging around, I did some running (even though my foot aches) and we went to the centre where just accidently we've found the best pub in the city (so they say at least) - The Cavens Arms, where we met german girl and I polish guy working in there (how did they get there?).

Jul. arrived at 3 o'clock and only managed to crawl to bed and fall asleep. No wonder, flight from Buenos Aires must have been exhausting. But it was good that she's got good sleep as on Saturday we were preparing for the wedding, painting nails, making make ups and enjoying our company. The three of us.
At 2 we were picked up by the bus to get a ride to the church. Views like from the Braveheart movie. Green hills, stone walls, church was also made from stone, with wooden roof painted from inside into rainbow colours.
Guests were also very stylish, some of the guys were wearinf kilts (together with groom and his best man), ladies wearing hats and dresses.
Service was completly different than what I know. Maybe it was because (if I'm not wrong) it was Anglican Church. There was not real service, whole thing was concentrated on bride and groom.
Next we were taken to the Dalton where party took place. White tent, nicely decoreatd, portable toilets, good food, champaign, funny speaches by father of R, groom, mest man and bridesmaid, ppt presentation with photos, crosswords about R and F, photo cameras on each table so that everyone can take photos if they feel like and of course ceilidh. I did not know that it is so easy. It is enought to count to eight, keep the rythm and wath someone who knows which way to go. I did not skip any dance and I guess that I've beed dancing at least with the half of the males that were attending the wedding ;-) Next day I was being recognised only due to my attitude. "Oh you are the girl that enjoyed dancing so much". But what a pity, that all of that finished at midnight. I wanted more.
On Sunday there was wedding continuation, a lunch at R's parents. Big open, house, huge garden, alaskan salmon hunted by her dad (dad with Hugh Grant's smile), elderflower siroup and butterscotch home made by her mum, merengues home made by granny. Chillout in the garden on blocks of straw, chatting with ppl from all over (there were guests from Argentina, Mexico, Finland, Spain, Germany, England, Scotland, Austria, Brazil), preparing old school MG for "just married" with the necessary equipment like baloons, cans at the rear bumper, teddy bears, condoms ect. I've also made a deal with dad to climb Ben Nevis one day.
Rest of the Sunday and Monday were deidcated to visit Edinburgh. In fact I've been there once, but 4 or 5 years ago for the Hogmany (which in the end was cancelled because of the strong wind) and I do not remember too much, so I wanted to do some little sightseeing with M and P. We've staid in High Street Hostel (which I think was a perfect choice of mine - right in the city centre, cheap and cool, actually the best word that comes to my mind how to describe it is german expression: "locker") and in fact we only saw Arthur's Seat with M. It was as windy there as hell, but it wos wortk climbing it. I was only regretting that my foot aches and that I cannot wear my jogging clothes and use it for my training. There were many joggers arround there. It't really cool to have such facilities in the inner city.
Most of the time just slipped through fingers, either we were eating something somewhere, or drinking and observing people through window and having loads of fun with that, or shopping (3 books and leather bag from TopShop) or sitting in the common room or partying during the night. So in fact we did discover at least 10 clubs down there (forget about finding good place on Sunday, we've spent about 3 hours just crawling fom one place to another to find some dance floor) met some funny looking people, but also some cool dudes even though they come up to be gays who stayed with us in a room in a hostel and somehow I could feel that from the same begining. Miss schwul detector ;-)

Zugspitze

It’s not SE Asia yet, but Germany. Zugspitze challenge. Second trial. Second failed. Scenario was completely the same as 4 weeks ago with K. Rain all the time. Ok maybe it was a little bit better on Friday. Last time it was already raining on our way from Hammersbach to Hoellentalangerhuette. This time it’s started to rain after we got there (2h door to door with 15 mins break before we entered Hoellentalklamm).

The hut this time was much more crowded than last time. Almost all sleeping places taken, that’s why with A. we got places in not very cosy, huge room with about 30 other people. But at least we were sharing table with two guys from Frankfurt who also wanted climb Zugspitze on Saturday. Like 90% of the people there. Of course everyone was very upset about the rain and snow on the top. Together with the information that on Thursday someone’s fallen down into the gap between the glacier and rocks it made me think that again we’ll not be able to reach the top.

And indeed even though we woke up at 5.30 (after maybe 2h of sleep as it was impossible to sleep in that huge room), we ate breakfast, we got ready on time, we did not decide to follow the right direction. We’ve decided that it makes no sense to hike when it’s raining cats and dogs and went to Osterfelderkopf through Rindweg. Our new friends from Frankfurt (A had an assumption that they are gays, but in my opinion there were talking something about their wives which he did not get, only some time after) joined us on that way. When we were leaving the cottage the owner, se recognised me from last time. No wonder, we’ve spend whole Saturday there last time.

Constant and steep hike. For A. and me manageable in 2h, for them about 25 mins longer. But still those 2h were enough so that my old waterproof pants soaked and water dropped to my shoes. Actually I was glad that we take a cable car and go to the car to drive to the swimming pool in Graniau ;-). After delicious lunch/dinner (even more delicious as we were not expecting that good quality of food) we drove back to Munich. 240/260 on tachometer allowed us to be back home in about 40 mins. In that car you even did not feel the speed. It looks like a crap, but it has power.
In the cable car with two Frankfurters ;-)
The same on Sunday, we got to Chiemsee in 40 mins after making a decision to go there at 15. Just spontaneous trip to a place where I’ve wanted to go before leaving Germany. It did not make big impression on me. From my personal point of view Koenigssee was much more fabulous. Maybe I have this impression cause this time I was only a Sunday tourist and at Koenigssee I was only dues to the fact that I went hiking.
